"My husband and I had a wonderful dancing lesson in Athens with Greek TravelTellers. After meeting Katerina, our local guide, and the other two couples who joined this lesson, we walked Dionysiou Areopageitou street and Katerina shared some really cool insights about the local life. Shortly after we reached Philopappos Hill and were surprised to see an outdoor theater on top of it, surrounded by trees. It was really nice! The heat was considerable so we took the lesson at a special dancing hall indoors (which was really nice). Our instructor was very kind and helpful and started by presenting a bit of the history of the Greek dances. At first we were really bad at this but after a while we started having a lot of fun and dancing a lot! It helped that the other couples were good company and we all laughed and danced a lot together. After the lesson ended, Katerina guided us back to Areopageitou street and recommended places for dinner that she likes. I definitely recommend this experience if you are interested in Greek folk dances and looking for some fun in Athens." |
2. What you can expect
In a country where folk dances are as alive today as they were in ancient times, Greece counts thousands of traditional dances, with every local community boasting its own. However, the first thing that comes to mind when someone talks about Greek dancing, is the famous Sirtaki from the beloved movie Zorba the Greek. The eminent Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis created this dance for the movie, taking inspiration from other famous traditional dances like Hasapiko and Hasaposerviko! What do they all have in common? They are fast, they are fun and they will definitely make you dance your heart out!
You will meet your local guide and get your feet warmed up as you walk through Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street, under the shadow of the Parthenon and on one of the best walking routes in Athens. After a short walk, you will reach the dance theater and an ideal setting where your teacher will be waiting to welcome you and start the Greek dance lesson.
Get shoulder to shoulder, follow the guidance of your licensed dancing teacher and let the rest become history. After this 1.5-hour dancing experience, you will be ready to rock it in any Greek tavern and bring the fun back to your home and your friends. Shall we dance like a Greek? |
