2. What you can expect
Athens has recently been characterized as the new Mecca of Street Art. And rightly so! The recent economic recession that hit the country hard, the immigration waves that the country received and the rise of far-right politicians are a few of many factors that have transformed the city. This led to a burst of artistic expression at the place to which everyone has access: the streets of the city. World-famous graffiti and street artists were attracted by the modern fights the people of Athens were giving and decided to make Athens their new home. Together with talented local artists, they have given their own fights, by creating striking pieces of art in many neighborhoods of the city.
Today, there are hundreds if not thousands of graffiti in Athens’ city center alone. For this street art tour, we decided to focus on the works that can be found in and around the historic neighborhood of Psyri, the district of villains and heroes. Together with your local guide, you will discover works by foreign renowned artists, like the Austrian surrealist Ruin and the Balinese WD, and excellent Greek artists, like INO and Taxis.
With the favorite new invention of the Greeks in hand, the refreshing Freddo espresso coffee, learn the difference between graffiti and street art and try to interpret the hidden meanings behind the commissioned work called Superman, by the visual artist Vasmou. Next, take a bugatsa with cream on the go (Greek’s most beloved snack, especially for breakfast) and “float above the city” with the magnificent street art by Taxis. Careful though not to fly too close to the stars, as the artists Paparazzi and Zhokhov have warned you.
These are only a few of the amazing and powerful works of street art we will discover during this alternative, guided walking tour in Athens. We invite conversation and your own interpretations during this walk - after all, this is the beauty of art. Last but not least, you will taste the famous Greek souvlaki, the king of street food in Athens, from our favorite souvlaki place in the city center. And before you go, we will treat you to the sweet delight called lukumades!
